A new report offers a casting update for Destin Daniel Cretton’s upcoming live-action Naruto movie. The update also names several key characters reportedly being considered for the big-screen adaptation.
According to Knight Edge Media, Lionsgate is reportedly conducting a global casting search for Team 7 members like Naruto Uzumaki, Sakura Haruno, and Sasuke Uchiha. The outlet also mentioned that they are currently casting Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage. The studio is reportedly considering several established Asian actors.
Charles Melton has reportedly been cast as Kakashi Hatake. Other manga characters that are expected to appear in the film include Iruka Umino, Mizuki, Haku, and Zabuza Momochi.

Several reported details differ from the original manga
While the film is reportedly based on the manga’s early storyline, the report details several changes to the characters’ backstories. The report mentions that the movie will dive deeper into the backstory of Sakura Haruno’s mother, Mebuki Haruno. The report also claims that Sakura’s father, Kizashi Haruno, will be killed during the Nine-Tails attack on the Hidden Leaf Village, unlike in the manga.
Iruka, who lives alone in the manga, will have a family in the movie. He reportedly lives with his grandparents, Jiji and Oba, after his parents die during the Nine-Tails attack.
Another major addition involves Gatō, the wealthy businessman from the Land of Waves story. His shipping company, Gatō Company, will reportedly play a prominent role.
However, some elements stay close to the source. Naruto’s parents, Kushina Uzumaki and Minato Namikaze, will reportedly appear in the opening scene during the Nine-Tails attack, similar to the anime’s opening.
Lionsgate has yet to confirm the cast updates and these reported plot changes. Fans should consider these details rumors, at least for now.
Viz Media is holding a dedicated panel at New York Comic Con on October 10, where fans can expect official movie details.
