Charles Spencer responded to an audience question about how he would handle the situation if he came across King Charles. The question came amid his ongoing dispute with King Charles over Princess Diana’s memoir. This comes a few days after the monarch, via Buckingham Palace, issued a rare response to early excerpts from the upcoming book.
Charles Spencer says he would likely keep his distance amid their public clash over his Diana memoir
In a recent conversation with Tina Brown at St. Peter’s Chelsea in New York City, Charles Spencer was asked what his response would be if he ever runs into King Charles, following their latest memoir clash. He said, “The Brits [are] very good at sort of catching each other’s eyes and operating in other parts of the room.” He was also asked how Princess Diana’s life would be if she had never become a part of the royal family. “Happy,” Spencer replied (via PEOPLE).
This remark comes after the monarch responded to Spencer’s early excerpts of his memoir. He said in a statement, “His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment, and color memory in ways others do not recognize, even many years after such a loss.”
During his recent conversation, Spencer said that King Charles shared a “very aggressive response.” He also mentioned that he had a “false reaction” to the entire book, adding, “I felt very frustrated, really, because anyone who reads the book will see that it’s a brother’s loving tribute to his sister. “
Several controversial claims were made in the memoir against King Charles. One of them is highlighting the heated conversation between Spencer and the monarch. He alleged that King Charles told him over the phone call, “We’ll forget her [Diana] soon enough.” Spencer also mentioned earlier that Prince William and Harry came to know about the memoir at the same time as his sisters, Lady Sarah and Lady Jane.
