All American Saved Its Most Emotional Return for the Very Last Scene

All American saved its most emotional surprise for the series finale’s very last scene. Showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll broke down the ending’s biggest character moments and one returning face.

Billy Baker’s return brings Spencer & Jordan’s story full circle

The All American series finale delivered a powerful closing moment, as reported by TVLine. Showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll revealed that Taye Diggs returned as Billy Baker for the show’s final scene. Spencer and Jordan sat on the South Crenshaw High football field reflecting on fatherhood and growth.

Carroll explained that the brotherhood between Spencer and Jordan always anchored her vision for the ending. She said the idea of Billy watching over his boys evolved after the character’s death on the show. Carroll noted that when she called Diggs about the cameo, “I don’t think I fully finished articulating the thought, and he was like, ‘I’m in.'”

The finale also featured a six-year time jump after Olivia’s twins, Mary and Corey, arrived safely. Spencer transferred to a Los Angeles NFL team and retired as a three-time Super Bowl champion. Jordan became South Crenshaw High’s head football coach and earned the NFL’s High School Head Coach of the Year honor.

Carroll shared that Jordan’s ending carried special weight because of his father’s legacy. She wanted Jordan’s achievement to surpass what Billy never accomplished in that role. Carroll added that crafting everyone’s endings meant “elevating everyone’s landing to being a dream achieved.” Coop became a full-fledged lawyer, sworn in by Laura Baker, while Layla welcomed a daughter named Monica after her late mother.

The new generation also received meaningful conclusions within the time jump. Khalil shifted from football to medical school after helping Olivia through early labor. Carroll described that moment as “the thing that should pivot what his dream is.” Amina pursued politics and ran her father’s successful campaign for a Crenshaw councilman seat.
