Rob Lowe has confirmed that the long-awaited St. Elmo’s Fire sequel is finally gaining momentum. This gives fans of the 1985 classic a concrete timeline to hold onto after years of speculation.
Rob Lowe shares the latest on the St. Elmo’s Fire sequel
During a Sunday appearance on Watch What Happens Live, Lowe revealed that production talks have advanced beyond the early stages. “It is definitely in the works, for sure,” he said. “All of us actors want to do it, and we’re supposed to get a draft of the script the first week of October.”
That October deadline gives the St. Elmo’s Fire sequel its clearest milestone yet. Lowe first hinted at progress in 2024, telling Entertainment Tonight that he had “met with the studio” and had “been talking about doing it for about four months,” though he stressed the project remained “very, very, very, very, very early stages.”
Demi Moore, Lowe’s co-star in the original film, later confirmed that Sony — the studio behind the 1985 release — was pushing the project forward. She said “conversations are happening” and that the studio was “really behind [and] driving this,” while noting they were still “looking for the right partner” to write the script.
Moreover, Lowe has also shared his vision for where his character, saxophonist Billy Hicks, could land decades later. Speaking with ComingSoon’s Tyler Treese, he said, “Yeah, I’m super excited about it,” adding, “We’re trying to get the script right.”
For now, the ball sits in the writers’ court. Once that October draft lands, Lowe and his co-stars will get their first real look at how Billy Hicks and the rest of the Georgetown gang have aged since 1985. Nothing is locked in yet: no production start date, no release window, no confirmed returning cast beyond Lowe’s own enthusiasm. But after two years of vague teases, a script deadline counts as genuine progress for a St. Elmo’s Fire sequel that once seemed stuck in limbo.
