Catherine Zeta-Jones’ New John Wick-Like TV Show Quickly Proves to Be Polarizing Among Critics

Early reactions to Catherine Zeta-Jones‘ new television series are mixed. Critics are divided over the John Wick-esque action thriller, which is set to make its streaming debut soon.

At the time of this article’s publication, Kill Jackie Season 1 holds a 40% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes. While some critics have praised the show’s ambition and Zeta-Jones’ performance, others have criticized its writing and originality.

FandomWire’s M.N. Miller writes, “Catherine Zeta-Jones gives the series a ruthless edge that far outweighs Killing Jackie’s shortcomings.”

Meanwhile, Cher Thompson from Screen Rant writes, “Kill Jackie has some hiccups, but for most of its run, it’s wickedly smart, ambitious, and fun,” adding, “Catherine Zeta-Jones is the beating heart of Kill Jackie, and the show itself knows that well.”

CBR’s Katie Doll gave a mixed review of the series, saying, “It has the flashy editing, chic soundtrack, and well-rounded cast, but it reads more as a routine miniseries that’ll go stale in a few months’ time.”

However, not all critics were forgiving in their reviews. According to The Daily Beast’s Nick Schager, Kill Jackie “lacks virtually everything it needs—inspiration, cleverness, hilarity, suspense—and its cartoonishness is so extreme that it murders any chance at being taken seriously.”

Additionally, Ed Power from the Daily Telegraph (UK) wrote, “…a decent cast and lively accent work cannot compensate for this hackneyed late entry in the genre of overcooked hitman comedy or for the stonking lack of originality that oozes from the show’s every pore.”

What is Catherine Zeta-Jones’ new TV show about?

Kill Jackie is an upcoming thriller television series adapted from Nick Harkaway’s novel The Price You Pay. It follows a wealthy art dealer with a secret past who becomes the target of a deadly group of hitmen, The Seven Demons. Instead of fleeing, she uses her old instincts and connections to hunt the killers down one by one.

In addition to Catherine Zeta-Jones, Kill Jackie stars Daniel Ings, Darci Shaw, Raff Law, Sidse Babett Knudsen, and others.

Kill Jackie premieres in the United States on October 2 on AMC+.
