Sydney Sweeney’s latest Novig advertisement has drawn criticism from several female athletes, but Megyn Kelly has come to the actress’s defense. During her show, Kelly addressed the backlash and offered her own take on the controversy surrounding Sweeney’s appearance in the campaign.
Megyn Kelly supports Sydney Sweeney amid Novig ad backlash
Megyn Kelly has defended Sydney Sweeney following the criticism surrounding the actress’s Novig advertisement. During the September 23 episode of The Megyn Kelly Show, Kelly addressed the response to the campaign and rejected the idea that Sweeney’s appearance should be viewed as a commentary on female athletes. “There’s been a predictable leftist feminist meltdown,” she said, as per OK Magazine.
Kelly discussed the issue with guest Emily Jashinsky, who noted that Sweeney “wasn’t holding herself up as an example of a real female athlete.” Kelly agreed with that point and questioned the criticism directed at Sweeney over the commercial. “Nobody’s taking a shot at female athletes or saying that they have to look like Sydney Sweeney,” she said. “Some female athletes are p****, but I don’t get it. I’m all for female athletes, but, like, since the dawn of time, we’ve been selling sports to men by using s*** women in ads,” the journalist added.
Kelly also questioned the criticism aimed at the Euphoria star for showing her body in the advertisement. She noted, “Sydney Sweeney, it would be like a tragedy if that woman didn’t occasionally show off that body. If I looked like that, I’d be doing nude ads too.”
The discussion came after Novig released a 60-second advertisement featuring Sweeney for its sports prediction platform. The commercial uses footballs, basketballs, a soccer ball, and a hockey net to cover parts of Sweeney’s body. Several female athletes subsequently criticized the campaign, arguing that it sexualized women in sports.
