Prince William reportedly took steps to protect his privacy during his university years. According to a source cited by an American website, the future king asked some friends at the University of St Andrews to sign confidentiality agreements.

William enrolled at St Andrews in Scotland in 2001. At the time, the university gave him a rare chance to experience student life away from the intense scrutiny surrounding the Royal Family.

However, RadarOnline.com claims that William remained aware of the value even ordinary details about his life could hold for the media.

“Going to St Andrews offered William something he knew was going to become increasingly difficult to find as he got older – the opportunity to spend several years being treated primarily as a young man rather than as a future monarch,” the source said.

The insider added that William wanted to enjoy dinners, nights out, friendships, and other parts of student life without worrying about private moments reaching newspapers.

According to the source, confidentiality agreements offered an extra layer of protection. The insider said William knew people around him could potentially face approaches from the press. The source explained that William wasn’t trying to control his friends’ behavior or isolate himself within a private royal circle. Instead, the source suggested that his intention was quite the opposite.

Meanwhile, St Andrews also played a major role in William’s personal life. He initially studied art history before switching to geography during his second year. He graduated with a Master of Arts degree in 2005.

More importantly, the university brought William closer to Catherine Middleton, who later became Catherine, Princess of Wales. The pair developed their relationship while studying there and married in 2011.

William previously spoke about the privacy he enjoyed at St Andrews. In 2004, he praised the local community for allowing him to live without constant media attention.

“It’s amazing how people just get on with their lives and will not bother you,” he said.
