Meghan Markle & Prince Harry Face Awkward ‘Role Clarity’ Problem — Expert

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have returned to the UK with their two children after spending years based in California. Their move has put their relationship with the Royal Family back under public scrutiny. It has also raised questions about how the couple will balance their private lives with their public work after King Charles issued a letter via Buckingham Palace, highlighting their role as “private citizens.”

Expert calls Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s ‘role clarity’ struggles a pressing PR issue

PR specialist Grayce McCormick told Express US that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s public position remains an important issue. “To me, the more pressing PR issue is role clarity rather than crisis. They can be private citizens, not representing the Crown, while remaining enormously visible public figures.”

Despite those concerns, McCormick also said, “[The couple is] doing remarkably well, given the extraordinary scrutiny surrounding virtually every personal, family, and professional decision they make.” She added, “Those two things aren’t contradictory. The challenge is ensuring the public understands when Harry and Meghan are acting personally, philanthropically, or commercially, versus when the working Royal Family is acting on behalf of the monarchy.”

The Sussexes arrived in the UK in late August with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. They remain non-working members of the Royal Family. The Palace has also clarified Harry and Meghan’s royal status after their UK return. On their decision to step back, McCormick said, “They stepped back from being working royals years ago, and I think it’s important to give them the same latitude we afford other people to choose where they live, how they raise their children, and what their next chapter looks like.”

Harry and Meghan’s time in Britain has also prompted speculation about whether the family could eventually leave California. The expert said she would not assume that was the case. McCormick said spending more time in the UK does not necessarily mean the couple is moving back permanently.

Harry and Meghan continue to maintain their house in California while living time in the UK for an extended period of time. Their changing public presence keeps questions about their royal roles in focus.
