Sarah Michelle Gellar just shut down any hope of a Buffy and Angel reunion with her savage words. The actress reunited with co-star David Boreanaz at the 2026 Emmys, where they reflected on the show’s legacy and honored late cast members.
Buffy and Angel reunite at Emmys with a brutal dig at canceled reboot
Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz reunited at the 2026 Primetime Emmys to present an award. The Buffy the Vampire Slayer co-stars took the stage at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles on Monday night. They presented the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.
Gellar joked about the show’s premise and the age gap between their characters. “A teenage girl chosen by fate to fight vampires, demons and forces of darkness, and then she falls in love with a vampire with a soul carrying around a couple hundred years of regret,” Gellar said. She noted that Boreanaz’s character Angel was 241 years old.
Boreanaz then said he always thought Buffy and Angel would end up together. “Well, I guess we won’t find out!” Gellar retorted. Her response referenced the canceled Buffy: New Sunnydale reboot at Hulu. The pilot, directed by Chloe Zhao from a script by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, did not move forward earlier this year.
The pair also honored late cast members during their appearance. “David and I would like to acknowledge that it has been a tough two years for our beloved cast and crew, and we feel very lucky to have known and worked with such amazing people,” Gellar said. Michelle Trachtenberg, who played Dawn Summers, passed away in February 2025 at 39. Nicholas Brendon, who played Xander Harris, died in March 2026 at 54. Anthony Head, who played Rupert Giles, died in June 2026 at 72.
The duo then presented the award to Matthew Rhys for his role in The Beast in Me. Buffy the Vampire Slayer ran for seven seasons beginning in 1997. Boreanaz next stars in NBC’s reboot of The Rockford Files, set to premiere in January 2027.
