The Office‘s fan-favorite spin-off TV show has returned to Peacock for its second season. The Paper Season 2 is all set to leave viewers entranced with its unparalleled workplace chaos. However, longtime fans of The Office may notice that the new season moves further away from its predecessor.
The Paper follows the documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch in The Office as they find a new subject in a historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it.
Per the synopsis shared by NBCUniversal, in this season, “After sweeping the Ohio Journalism Awards, Ned searches for a journalistic crusade, coming for a local private club and jeopardizing the paper, while he and Mare try to figure out their attraction, Esmeralda struggles to find her place, and the staff gradually mature as reporters.”
What are critics saying about The Paper Season 2?
As of this writing, The Paper Season 2 holds an 85% Tomatometer score based on 13 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
CBR‘s Katie Doll said, “Where The Paper continues to thrive is showing off different types of personalities within the journalism landscape, and the witty jokes that arise from it.”
Collider‘s Tania Hussain says this season makes the spin-off feel “less like a show living in The Office’s shadow and more like a workplace comedy that can actually stand beside it.”
Meanwhile, Richard Roeper from RogerEbert.com said, “Breezy but uneven, pleasant but rarely memorable, clever but sometimes contrived.”
IGN Movies‘ Michael Peyton echoed similar thoughts, saying, “While some of these swings don’t always connect, The Paper Season 2 cashes in on enough of its bets to continue being both a worthwhile successor to The Office and a refreshing comedy in its own right.”
Alexander Zalben for Comic Book Club, however, criticized the season, saying, “While there’s some impressive recalibration that has gone into the second, 10-episode season of the series… A lot of that recalibration went in entirely the wrong directions.”
The Paper Season 2 is now streaming all 10 episodes on Peacock.
