Deadline has revealed the first-look images from Black Palace, Nick Hamm’s period thriller set in Jack the Ripper-era London. The film stars Freya Allan, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Joe Anders, Raffey Cassidy, Iain Glen, Martin Clunes, and Juliet Stevenson. Jon Croker wrote the screenplay, and the movie is currently in post-production.
Black Palace takes place in London in 1888, as tabloid media terrifies the public with stories of Jack the Ripper. A young woman receives a mission to work at Buckingham Palace at the heart of Queen Victoria’s British Empire. Her task requires her to spy on Victoria’s wayward grandson, who keeps disappearing at night.
As she grows closer to the prince, she uncovers secrets threatening both the Crown and her own survival. New Regency handles worldwide sales for the project. The company will begin talks with potential distributors as the fall festival season approaches.
Marie-Christine Jaeger-Firmenich produces for SIMIA Productions alongside Piers Tempest for Tempo Productions. Mark Huffam and Nick Hamm also produce under their newly created banner, Hamm4. Hannah Shipley and Will Matthew co-produce, while Jeremy Bolt and Croker serve as executive producers.
Director Nick Hamm discussed his approach to the film’s tone in a statement. “The film is constantly shifting between question and answer, tone and perspective, and that demanded a similarly fluid approach to genre,” Hamm said. He added that the film “becomes a kind of Jekyll & Hyde experience: romantic and terrifying, seductive and unsettling in equal measure.” Hamm noted that extreme fear had to sit alongside extreme passion throughout the story.
