A tight five-day window from Steven Spielberg played a key role in creating Zach Cregger‘s next movie. Another of his upcoming films, based on Capcom’s Resident Evil franchise, is set for a theatrical debut this month.
Ahead of Resident Evil’s arrival, Cregger has teased his next project, The Flood, and his collaboration with Steven Spielberg in an interview with Deadline. When asked what inspired the idea for The Flood, a sci-fi thriller set in space, the filmmaker recalled a short window in which he had to come up with an idea for Spielberg, who serves as a producer on the project.
“I kind of came up with the idea because I was very excited to work with Steven Spielberg, and we had a weird situation where there was a short window where I could have an idea and we could link up together. So I had like five days, basically, to have an idea,” Cregger said.
Cregger continued and added, “I entered a mental state I have yet to ever repeat or do prior, where I was in some sort of frenzy where I was just like, ‘I’ve got to have an idea for Steven Spielberg!'”
He mentioned that he was fascinated by the concept of characters getting stuck inside a ship in outer space.

What’s next for Zach Cregger after Resident Evil?
Zach Cregger already has several projects lined up following Resident Evil’s release on September 18, 2026. While it is his first film in the survival-horror franchise, he is already considering further stories.
Cregger revealed that he initially thought Resident Evil might be the only movie he would make based on Capcom’s blockbuster game franchise. But once he was done with the movie, he realized that there were more ideas to explore.
“That was not what I was thinking when I was making the movie,” he told Polygon in an interview. “I was thinking one and done. Now that it’s completed, I can’t help myself. This is just the way my brain works. I’ve already got other ideas of what could happen.” However, he did not reveal what those potential future Resident Evil stories might involve.
Cregger is also working as a producer on upcoming movies, including Gladys, a sequel to his horror hit Weapons. He will also serve as a producer on Little One, a dark comedy.
