Ryan Reynolds praised Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey after it dethroned Deadpool & Wolverine as the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever. Reynolds spoke at the Mayday premiere Tuesday night, per Variety. He called the film “an incredible, incredible movie” and Nolan “a singular filmmaker.”
“Christopher Nolan literally breathes the rarest air on Earth,” Reynolds said. He also highlighted the cast, noting “Matt Damon, Tom Holland, who’s clearly batting a thousand” with Zendaya. Reynolds then shifted his focus to the broader moviegoing experience.
“I just love that people are going to the movie theaters,” Reynolds said. “I don’t even care why or for what reason. Just go to the movie theaters. There’s no better shared experience.” Furthermore, he described the theatrical experience as “collective effervescence.” He also added that shared viewing “bonds us together as a society.”
Earlier, Reynolds previously posted a 36-second video on Instagram and X combining footage from both films. In the post, he captioned it congratulating the cast and crew of The Odyssey. Specifically, the video paired Matt Damon’s Odysseus with the chaotic Honda Odyssey minivan brawl from Deadpool & Wolverine. Reynolds joked, “That is one helluva car,” referencing Deadpool’s insistence that the minivan is “not a car.”
Meanwhile, The Odyssey has now earned approximately $1.56 billion worldwide, per Box Office Mojo. The film holds a 36.5 percent domestic and 63.5 percent international split. In comparison, Deadpool & Wolverine finished its 2024 run at $1.338 billion worldwide. Universal produced The Odyssey for a reported $250 million budget.
On the other hand, Disney spent a reported $537 million on production and marketing for Deadpool & Wolverine. Additionally, major markets remain in play for Nolan’s film. Japan opens on September 11, and China has already grossed $35.9 million since its August 14 debut.
