An Oscar and Emmy winner has been added to the ensemble of Will Smith‘s Supermax. The upcoming film is directed by David Gordon Green. Smith’s new project is an action crime thriller set in a high-security prison.
Melissa Leo is set to feature in Supermax, according to Variety. Alongside Smith, Leo joins previously announced cast members AnnaSophia Robb, Jason Clarke, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Andrés Almeida, Martin Bats Bradford, Erika Ringor, and Jaafar Jackson.
Leo began her acting career in the early 1980s. The actress earned a Primetime Emmy nomination for her role as Linda Warner in All My Children. The Academy Award winner’s breakthrough role was Detective Kay Howard, which she played in Homicide: Life on the Street. She also received a Best Actress Academy Award nomination for Frozen River.
In 2011, Leo won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Alice Eklund-Ward in David O. Russell’s The Fighter. Apart from this, she also won an Emmy for her guest appearance in FX’s Louie. The 65-year-old’s other credits include Mildred Pierce, All The Way, Prisoners, The Equalizer, and more.
The Emmy winner’s most recent role was in Paramount’s supernatural horror, Passenger. She recently wrapped filming as the lead in Sean Byrne’s The Mannequin, alongside Lili Reinhart.
Supermax follows FBI agents inside a maximum-security prison
Leo’s role in Gordon Green’s upcoming thriller remains under wraps. Smith is set to lead the crime thriller.
Gordon Green’s Supermax is based on a script by David Weil and David J. Rosen. It follows two FBI agents investigating a seemingly impossible murder inside the walls of a maximum-security prison. Amazon MGM acquired the movie from Miramax for $70 million in May 2026.
In addition to starring, Smith is producing the movie with Adam Fishbach, Andrew Rona, and Alex Heineman. Weil and Rosen are also set to serve as executive producers alongside Jonathan Glickman, Alexandra Loewy, Thom Zadra, Spencer Ela, James Lassiter, and Miguel Melendez.
Supermax will skip a theatrical run and premiere directly on Prime Video. However, no release date has been announced yet.
