Kenneth Branagh has not closed the door on another Hercule Poirot adventure. After three films as Agatha Christie’s celebrated Belgian detective, the actor-director says he would gladly put on Poirot’s famous mustache again, leaving the door open for another mystery.

Kenneth Branagh addressed the possibility during an interview with Screen Rant, when asked whether audiences could expect Hercule Poirot back anytime soon. His response sounded more hopeful than definitive. “I’d always love to return to that pair of mustaches,” he explained, before pointing to Agatha Christie’s rich catalog and saying, “Any chance to go back would be great.” Branagh specifically mentioned Curtain, Poirot’s final case, as a story with considerable dramatic power.
That enthusiasm matters because Poirot remains one of Christie’s most recognizable creations. The Belgian private detective first appeared in The Mysterious Affair at Styles in 1920, and Christie eventually featured him across 33 novels and numerous short stories. Poirot’s razor-sharp deduction skills, eccentric habits, love for perfectly symmetrical boiled eggs, and unexpected kindness have kept the character alive across generations.
Branagh’s Poirot era began with Murder on the Orient Express in 2017 and continued through Death on the Nile in 2022 and A Haunting in Venice in 2023. Branagh pulled double duty on all three movies, directing while starring as the famously meticulous sleuth. To shape the role, he went back to Christie’s novels and worked with a dialect coach to nail Poirot’s Belgian accent.
Branagh’s take on Poirot is just one chapter in a long screen history for Christie’s legendary detective. Peter Ustinov built a particularly memorable run, appearing as the sleuth in three movies and three television films. Albert Finney also made an impression, earning an Oscar nomination for his 1974 performance in Murder on the Orient Express.
Television, however, belongs largely to David Suchet. From 1989 through 2013, he portrayed Poirot in 70 adaptations spread across 13 series.
