The Wrong Girls did an opening collection of over $433k across 520 theaters when it was released on August 14. The movie’s domestic total stands at $858,645, and it earned around $4k internationally. Its overall collection amounted to $862,736.
Beyond its poor box office performance, the movie also received a 59 percent score on the Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes based on critic reviews. On the other hand, it earned a higher score of 65 percent on the Popcornmeter based on audience reviews. While critics gave it a mixed reception, they mainly praised the chemistry between the two leads, played by Stewart and Shawkat. Critics also praised the movie’s humor but believed it suffered from pacing issues.
The movie’s logline, as mentioned under its YouTube trailer, reads, “Two codependent best friends living paycheck to paycheck and bong rip to bong rip get caught in a case of mistaken identity that throws their lives into chaos.”
Stewart’s wife, Dylan Meyer, directed the movie, and she praised her in an interview with People before the movie’s release. The “Twilight” actor told the outlet, “Dylan’s really good at it. I think if you have a movie in you and it needs to come out and you communicate well and you know how to pick your people.” She further commented on being directed by her wife in the movie and added, “It was the f***ing easiest thing. And yeah, she’s pretty prolific, man. She’s just got so many movies in her. I just can’t wait to see what happens.”
