Jelly Roll’s NSFW jab at President Donald Trump on Monday, August 24th’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! drew a lot of backlash from Trump supporters. Upon resuming hosting duties on Tuesday night’s episode, he quipped, “Who would have guessed I’d get in more trouble with the president than Rosie O’Donnell?” He said that the backlash from the President’s supporters came because he failed to “treat the president with reverence and dignity.”
Rosie O’Donnell, the comedian who has had a long-standing feud with the President, also took shots at Donald Trump the previous week. This was when she was in charge of hosting the show, as Jimmy Kimmel took his annual vacation.
Jelly Roll explains why he thinks his Trump jokes caught people off guard
Jelly Roll cracked jokes about an IndyCar race on the streets of Washington, D.C. during his August 24th appearance. The joke that seemingly had Trump’s supporters riled up targeted the ‘lap of honor’ that the President took on the racetrack. Regarding the lap, Jelly quipped, “Trump also drove around the track in his motorcade doing what they call the ‘lap of honor,’ which sounds like a loyalty program at a strip club.” He also went on to make comments about the Commander in Chief’s weight.
Jelly Roll, whose real name is Jason DeFord, shared why he thought his comments and jokes infuriated Trump supporters the following day. On Tuesday’s episode, he stated, “They see a guy that looks like me and assume the only opinion I have is whether I prefer my meth crystal or classic.”
Additionally, after acknowledging the backlash, Jelly would go on to take shots at the various policies that Trump had enacted during his tenure. He said, ” Now, let’s be honest for a second. Any U.S. president should be able to handle a few jokes, right? They should also be able to handle gas prices, healthcare, and the occasional international conflict, but beggars can’t be choosers.”
Jelly Roll had also received a lot of criticism in 2024 from anti-Trump factions in the country. The singer had talked to Donald Trump at a UFC fight shortly after the election, when Donald Trump was the president-elect.
