Netflix’s New Willy Wonka TV Show With Controversial AI Gene Wilder Voice Gets Trailer

Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for its new Willy Wonka reality TV show. It is a reality competition series based on Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and inspired by the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.

Wonka’s The Golden Ticket premieres on Netflix on Wednesday, September 23, 2026. The debut season will consist of nine episodes, with a two-part finale on September 30. In this upcoming reality game show, contestants will participate in challenges inside a recreation of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory inspired by the 1971 movie and Dahl’s novel.

The trailer features an AI recreation of the voice of the late Gene Wilder, who portrayed Willy Wonka in the 1971 film adaptation. Netflix worked with AI audio company ElevenLabs to recreate Wilder’s voice with the consent of his estate. However, the decision has sparked controversy.

What do we see in the trailer for Wonka’s The Golden Ticket?

The official trailer for Wonka’s The Golden Ticket begins with contestants admiring the stunning decor inside the replica of the iconic chocolate factory.

The reality competition series draws inspiration from Dahl’s original story, where 12 lucky Golden Ticket winners, each with a partner of their choosing, must face a series of challenges. In the end, only one contestant will win “Wonka’s life-changing prize.”

Furthermore, the footage shows the Oompa Loompas guiding the contestants through the factory as they navigate a series of games. Meanwhile, Wilder’s recreated voice plays in the background, explaining the rules. It then features a montage of the participants tackling several physically and mentally exhausting challenges.

The AI recreation of Wilder’s voice was created with the consent of his estate, with his wife, Karen B. Wilder, issuing a statement on its use, “We are delighted that ‘Wonka’s The Golden Ticket’ celebrates the warmth and imagination that he brought to the role, introducing that magic to a new generation while honoring the fans who have cherished it for decades,” she said in a statement as per Variety.
