A24‘s Backrooms is headed to streaming following a phenomenal theatrical run earlier this year. The movie received widespread critical acclaim and became A24’s highest-grossing film to date.
Backrooms will stream exclusively on HBO Max from Friday, September 25, 2026 onward. The movie will then debut on HBO linear on Saturday, September 26 at 8:00 p.m. ET. The A24 film’s streaming debut comes three months after its theatrical release on May 29.
What is the plot of A24’s Backrooms movie?
Backrooms is a science fiction psychological horror film directed by Kane Parsons and written by Will Soodik. It is based on Parsons’ web series of the same name, which itself was inspired by the 2019 “Backrooms” creepypasta.
The movie follows Clark, a furniture store owner and failed architect, who discovers a portal in his basement that leads to the Backrooms, an endless extra-dimensional labyrinth of yellow rooms and long corridors. After narrowly escaping from the place, he tells his therapist Mary Kline, all about it. But Mary remains skeptical.
However, when Mary receives a strange answering-machine message from Clark saying he will not return from the Backrooms, she grows concerned. Mary then decides to head to the Backrooms herself, where she experiences the true horrors of the place firsthand.
Backrooms marks Parsons’ feature directorial debut. The movie stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as Clark and Renate Reinsve as Dr. Mary Kline. Other cast members include Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Lukita Maxwell, Avan Jogia, Robert Bobroczkyi, and Krista Kosonen.
Backrooms had a phenomenal box office run, grossing a worldwide total of $396.5 million against a budget of less than $10 million. In its second week, the movie became A24’s highest-grossing film of all time, with Parsons becoming the youngest filmmaker at the time to reach number one at the box office. Additionally, the film currently holds an 87% score on Rotten Tomatoes‘ Tomatometer, with positive reviews from 303 critics.
Following the movie’s release, Parsons expressed interest in expanding the Backrooms universe with future projects. However, a new installment has not been announced yet.
