MGM+ has set the stage for another dark chapter in Stephen King’s supernatural world. The sci-fi series, The Institute, will return for Season 2 in fall 2026, giving fans another trip into the sinister facility and its dangerous experiments. The network has not announced the exact premiere date, but production has already wrapped, so the wait should be short.
The Institute Season 2 release date isn’t far now
The upcoming season of The Institute follows the fallout from Luke Ellis’ battle against the mysterious organization that abducted him and other gifted youngsters. The first eight episodes adapted most of King’s 2019 novel, while several changes to the finale created fresh possibilities beyond the book. Joe Freeman will return as Luke, with Ben Barnes’ Tim Jamieson and Mary-Louise Parker’s Ms. Sigsby also back.
According to Screen Rant, the new installment also features some fresh faces to bring to the mystery. Game of Thrones actor Alfie Allen appears in the newly released first-look material, although details surrounding his character remain under wraps. The preview also shows Luke looking uneasy behind a doorway, Tim speaking with him, and Sigsby inside what appears to be a study.
Benjamin Cavell is steering the TV adaptation, with From alum Jack Bender handling directing and producing duties. Stephen King is also on board as an executive producer, keeping a direct connection to the project. MGM+ wasted little time giving the show another run, ordering the second season in August 2025, just weeks after the first season wrapped. Production on the next eight episodes finished in June 2026, clearing the runway for its fall comeback.
King fans will have plenty more coming after Luke’s next eight-episode chapter. Prime Video’s Carrie is set to premiere on October 7, while HBO is developing another season of IT: Welcome to Derry. The growing lineup also includes Mike Flanagan’s take on The Mist, a fresh version of The Stand, Mister Yummy, and Netflix’s upcoming Cujo remake. As for The Institute, though, MGM+ still hasn’t pulled the trigger on a third season.
