Nearly 30 years after Princess Diana‘s fatal car crash in Paris, a new documentary revisits that night in unprecedented detail. The special follows the late princess’s final evening and examines the theories and speculation surrounding the crash. Prince William was 15, and Prince Harry was 12 when they lost their mother following the tragedy.
Princess Diana’s fatal Paris crash revived in new special
The news of Princess Diana’s death stunned the world and dominated headlines overnight. On August 31, 1997, the car she was riding in crashed in a Paris tunnel. Diana, her partner Dodi Fayed, and their driver Henri Paul all died in the crash. Yet, almost 30 years on, her death is still surrounded by unanswered questions.
In a new investigation, TMZ’s new special “Celebrity Crime Scene: Princess Diana” puts retired Secret Service agent Rich Staropoli and a team of experts to work, using A.I. to investigate the theories behind decades of speculation.
Ideas range from unseen cars in the tunnel to speculation that influential members of the monarchy wanted Diana silenced. The special premiered Thursday, August 20, 2026, at 8:00 PM ET/PT on FOX, and became available to stream on Hulu on August 21.
According to Extra TV, Staropoli said, “We’re able to use 21st-century, cutting-edge A.I. to replicate the entire series of events that led up to the car crash inside that tunnel in Paris almost 30 years ago.”
He further explained that the special breaks down the events in painstaking detail. Viewers will see exactly how things unfolded 30 years ago, and experience being in the tunnel and on the streets of Paris.
When it came to the theories, the former Secret Service agent noted that one story has persisted for years about a white Fiat. He said that the alleged “clipping incident” in the tunnel set off a chain reaction that caused the Mercedes to crash into a pillar, killing two passengers and Princess Diana.
According to him, their recreation confirmed that it happened. The team also matched paint found on the Mercedes to a Fiat Uno, and that evidence is visible to viewers.
