Sandra Bullock Says She Grieved Bryan Randall Before His Death

Sandra Bullock’s partner, Bryan Randall, passed away on August 5, 2023. The photographer was revealed to be suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. In a recent interview, Bullock opened up about her partner’s tragic passing and the secrecy of his fight against the disease.

Sandra Bullock shares rare details about Bryan Randall’s final years

On the SmartLess podcast, Sandra Bullock talked about Bryan Randall’s three-year battle against ALS. She revealed how Randall asked her not to share his diagnosis, and that she knows why he asked her to. However, also explained that his request “isolated [her] in the process.” Bullock said she wasn’t “allowed to tell anybody,” including podcast host and her friend Jason Bateman’s wife Amanda Anka, who is also part of her circle.

The Oscar-winning actress admitted that her sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, “was the only one who knew for a while.” Bullock added, “At first I go, ‘Oh, I can handle that. I can be quiet. However, the actress was aware of how her fame could have an impact on others’ lives. “I don’t want to harm others because of what I do, so I think not talking for a while was good,” the 62-year-old admitted.

However, dealing with Randall’s health issues and raising two children during the COVID-19 pandemic made Bullock face “a trifecta that was pretty dark.” Bullock added that she eventually decided to share her problems with Anka and another friend, Jennifer Aniston. Moreover, the actress accepted the bitter fact that her partner would ultimately die as a result of the disease. As such, she began grieving him years before he died. “I think where he was in his journey, both physically and mentally, I started grieving Bryan four years before he passed,” Bullock explained.

She continued, “There was something that had shifted. My person left a lot earlier than the body left.” The mother of two added, “I don’t think I ever dealt with that until after he passed, because you’re just on this treadmill.”
