The official trailer for the new horror movie, Never After Dark, is here, featuring a popular Shōgun star. With a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score of 100%, the film has already created a buzz ahead of its release.
In Never After Dark, SAG Award and Critics’ Choice Award Winner Moeka Hoshi, known for Shōgun, Over the Town, and more, plays a medium named Airi. Her work involves guiding restless spirits out of the living world. She is accompanied by her companion and dead sister, Miku.
The official synopsis for Never After Dark reads, “A wandering medium, Airi, spends her life guiding restless spirits out of the world of the living accompanied by her constant companion: her dead sister Miku. Summoned to exorcise a spirit from an isolated country house by the new owner, Teiko, she comes face to face with a grotesque apparition with powers that defy Airi’s experience. Faced with skepticism from Teiko’s son, Gunji, she digs deeper into the house’s past until a secret comes to light — and Airi finds herself hunted by a far more unpredictable force. For the first time, her greatest adversary is not the supernatural, but the living. Director Dave Boyle spins a uniquely terrifying and hauntingly atmospheric ghost story.”

What do we see in the Never After Dark trailer?
The Never After Dark trailer opens with our protagonist, Airi, lighting a matchstick, before the screen cuts to black and a voice cries, “Run away!” Airi is then seen visiting a grand, picturesque country house, surrounded by trees, hidden away in the wilderness.
Upon meeting the house owners, Airi introduces herself. “There’s a veil between our worlds. I pierce the wall to guide lost spirits into the next world.” But she makes one thing very clear to them. “I never work at night,” because the “veil’s too thin.” She is informed about a dark presence in the house.
Inside, she encounters a distorted ghost having mysterious, sinister powers. “This spirit is… different.” While going deep into the house’s past and secrets, Airi is eventually hunted by this unpredictable force, beyond her understanding of spirits. While confronting the dark figure, she says, “Nobody accepts they’re dead.” The trailer ends on a creepy note with a haunting voice.
Directed by Dave Boyle, the horror movie’s cast also features Kurumi Inagaki (House of Ninjas), Kento Kaku (House of Ninjas), Mutsuo Yoshioka (Chime), Bokuzo Masana (Tokyo Vice), and Tae Kimura (All Around Us).
Magnolia Pictures’ Never After Dark will hit theaters on September 25, 2026. The movie has already won the SXSW Midnighter Audience Award and the Grand Jury Prize for Feature Film at the Overlook Film Festival.
