Meghan Markle is facing a blunt assessment of her Hollywood standing from celebrity journalist Rob Shuter. During an episode of The Nerve with Maureen Callahan, he discussed Markle’s recent appearance with Prince Harry at the David Foster Foundation’s 40th-anniversary gala in Victoria, Canada.
The event marked the couple’s first joint public appearance after their return from the UK. During the gala, footage appeared to show music mogul David Foster walking past Markle without acknowledging her. The moment caught attention online and became part of the wider discussion on the podcast.
Shuter seemingly viewed the interaction as more than an awkward moment. He interpreted it as a possible public snub, although Foster has since clarified that he did not deliberately ignore Markle.
The journalist then made a broader claim about Markle’s place in Hollywood. “Hollywood is sick of Meghan Markle,” Shuter stated. He claimed the industry still has some affection for Harry, partly because he remains Princess Diana’s son. However, he suggested Markle has not received the same goodwill.
Shuter also argued that Hollywood’s attitude toward Markle has changed over time. According to his assessment, she was initially accepted but was never fully embraced by the industry. “They tolerated her,” he said. “They pretended to tolerate her in the beginning and now she’s intolerable.”
His criticism also extended to Markle’s career direction. Since stepping away from royal duties, she has pursued projects that focus more on lifestyle and entertainment. Shuter claimed that her attempt to establish herself as a lifestyle influencer has not been received particularly well.
American businesswoman Martha Stewart also recently discussed Markle in an interview with PEOPLE. She said, “If you’re an actress, it’s hard to then transition to a princess and then from a princess into a homemaking guru on a television show. It doesn’t sort of follow. So go from there.”
In Shuter’s view, the Suits actor and the “Spare” author may have recognized a problem with their post-royal identities. “She’s realized, Harry has realized that the only thing that makes them interesting is their association to the royal family,” he claimed.
