Netflix subscribers have only a little time left to catch one of Gerard Butler’s most popular crime thrillers. The 2018 heist movie Den of Thieves is scheduled to leave the streaming service very soon, giving fans of the gritty action movie a final chance to revisit it.
Den of Thieves leaving Netflix next month
As per What’s on Netflix, Den of Thieves will be leaving Netflix on September 1st, giving fans of intense action thrillers a limited window to stream the popular crime movie.
Christian Gudegast directed the R-rated thriller, which stars Butler as Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department officer “Big Nick” O’Brien, with Pablo Schreiber, O’Shea Jackson Jr. and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson rounding out the central cast. The story pits Nick’s crew against heavily armed robbers with ex-military backgrounds preparing an audacious attempt to steal from the Federal Reserve. The movie opened in U.S. theaters Jan. 19, 2018.
Made for an estimated $30 million, the movie pulled in just over $80.5 million worldwide, including nearly $44.9 million domestically. Despite its success with moviegoers, critics were divided on the film. The film currently holds a 42% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, while its audience score sits considerably higher at 64%.
In a review for Empire Magazine, critic James White called the crime thriller “slick and solid in moments,” but also added that it “disappoints with its reliance on easy plotting and gruff, overcooked acting.”
A sequel, titled Den of Thieves: Pantera, was released on January 10, 2025. The direct follow-up brought Butler and Jackson Jr. back for a European diamond-heist story. Gudegast returned as writer and director, with Butler also returning as a producer. The sequel earned over $58 million worldwide and was met with a higher number of positive reviews from critics and audiences, according to Rotten Tomatoes.
