Jesse Eisenberg’s $475M Disappointment Is Finally Getting Its Due on Digital Streaming

Jesse Eisenberg‘s recent box office disappointment is finding new life on digital streaming. The animated sequel tops multiple digital sales charts despite being the franchise’s lowest-grossing entry to date at the global box office.

Minions & Monsters is topping all movies after digital release

Jesse Eisenberg’s Minions & Monsters now sits at No. 1 on the iTunes and Apple TV Store movie sales charts after its digital debut, according to PopVortex.

The film also entered the top three on Amazon’s Prime Video store and cracked the top 10 on Google Play and Vudu, per FlixPatrol data from August 13. Industry watchers expect the title to reach No. 1 on Prime Video’s storefront as well in the coming days.

The animated sequel directed by Pierre Coffin arrived on digital platforms after concluding its theatrical run with notable numbers. The film earned $178.2 million domestically, adding to a worldwide total of $475.8 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

The relatively underwhelming take makes it the lowest-grossing entry in the Despicable Me and Minions franchise. Its $37 million domestic opening from 4,243 theaters also marked the smallest debut across the series, falling well below the $115.7 million opening weekend of the original Minions spinoff in 2015.

Every other sequel or spin-off in the franchise following the original Despicable Me film either approached or surpassed the $1 billion mark at the global box office:

  • Despicable Me (2010): $544.1 million worldwide
  • Despicable Me 2 (2013): $970.7 million worldwide
  • Minions (2015): $1.15 billion worldwide
  • Despicable Me 3 (2017): $1.03 billion worldwide
  • Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022): $940.4 million worldwide
  • Despicable Me 4 (2024): $972 million worldwide

Minions & Monsters will still turn a profit for Universal Pictures given the franchise’s historically modest production budgets. The film held the No. 1 domestic spot for its first two weekends before steadily declining through a six-week theatrical window. Its international gross of $297.6 million accounted for 62.5% of the worldwide haul, consistent with the franchise’s strong overseas earning pattern throughout its history.

The film is currently available to rent or buy on iTunes, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, Google Play, and Vudu.
