The White House has officially commemorated one of the internet’s favorite political jokes. Secretary of State Marco Rubio received a gold-framed collage for his 55th birthday. It features dozens of variations of the viral “Rubio realizing” meme.

The gift, presented in May, features an elaborate collage containing 68 different meme versions of Marco Rubio. It places the nation’s top diplomat into a dizzying array of imaginary roles.
At the center of the mosaic sits the original, unaltered photo of Rubio slumped on an Oval Office couch. The photo has been signed by President Donald Trump in gold ink with the message: “You are great.” The joke lands particularly well because Rubio has already accumulated an unusually high number of real responsibilities. He serves as Secretary of State and acting national security advisor, and previously pulled double duty as acting archivist and acting administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development.
The meme originated from a serious moment on February 28, 2025, during a contentious Oval Office meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. A photograph caught Rubio sitting low on a couch, hands interlocked, with an expression the internet quickly interpreted as uncomfortable realization.
The memes followed swiftly. When Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro was captured, meme Rubio appeared dressed as though he was prepared to take over the country. When Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz announced he would not seek re-election, Rubio was depicted in blaze-orange hunting gear, complete with a shotgun.
Rubio admitted he wasn’t initially thrilled. “The meme thing, you know, was interesting, ’cause when it first came out, I hated that picture,” Rubio told Lara Trump on Fox News’ My View. He blamed the Oval Office couch, explaining, “If you don’t have a pillow behind your back, you kinda sink.” But the secretary of state eventually surrendered to the court of public opinion. “And then it turned into this other thing, and it was fine. And it’s funny,” Rubio said.
