A recent report suggests that Prince William will never carry on King Charles‘ tradition of wearing kilts while in Scotland. The King is fond of the tradition and has frequently been seen following it in Scotland. However, William seems determined to avoid it upon becoming King. The Royal family is set to embark on their yearly summer retreat at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.
Prince William rarely wears a kilt publicly despite King Charles’enthusiasm for traditional Scottish dress
Prince William is known to have worn kilts during the Royal Family’s Scottish summer retreat as a kid. However, he might never follow that tradition as an adult, even after becoming King.
According to a recent report by The Mirror, Prince William is allegedly not interested in keeping the 170-year-old kilt tradition alive once he becomes King. This comes just before the Royal Family leaves for Balmoral Castle for their yearly family retreat. The traditional garment is one thing King Charles has been spotted wearing on numerous occasions. The most recent was a photograph showing him wearing a kilt while interacting with locals in the town of Dingwall.
Although William appears in a kilt in official family portraits as a kid, he has never been publicly seen wearing one. In 2023, Majesty Magazine’s Joe Little spoke on this matter and said it was a shock that William had never been spotted wearing a kilt in public, “though he may have done so in private.” He added that this was because sightings of William in rural Scotland are not common. Little further stated that if William wore a kilt in public, he “would silence his critics.” (via The Guardian)
According to a Daily Express report, William also described the kilt as “a bit draughty” during a 2003 interview. Moreover, he chose not to wear one at his graduation ceremony in June 2005 at the University of St Andrews.
