John Oliver’s Days of Our Lives look is very different from General Hospital
John Oliver plays two very different characters across his soap opera guest appearances this summer. Specifically, Oliver portrays Devlin St. John, Salem’s Chief Water Inspector, on Days of Our Lives. The role contrasts sharply with his General Hospital character Z, the head of the World Security Bureau (WSB).
Meanwhile, Oliver’s DOOL episodes stream on Tuesday, August 11, Wednesday, August 12, and Friday, August 14 on Peacock. His three-day run on General Hospital previously aired back in July. The WSB role carried a spy-thriller tone, while his DOOL character instead tackles local government corruption.
Devlin St. John gets involved in the storyline surrounding EJ DiMera’s illegal disposal of contaminated drugs. The contamination affected some of Salem’s water supply, and Devlin investigates the cover-up. Oliver shares scenes with Jackée Harry, Dan Feuerriegel, and Maggie Carney on the show.
Harry teased Paulina’s scenes with Devlin to TV Insider. “He is trying to get one over on the city of Salem and she is not having it,” Harry said. “And then he’s onto the next victim.” Feuerriegel also praised Oliver’s work ethic and commitment to the role.
Oliver told Access Hollywood that the guest gig “is a dream come true.” He added, “People on soaps work incredibly hard. The schedule is nuts. This moves so fast.” Feuerriegel shared his own perspective with the outlet as well. “Hearing John talk about how hard we work… it’s a lovely thing,” he said.
DOOL typically tapes its episodes nearly a year in advance. The production team dropped Oliver’s scenes into already-filmed episodes to fast-track his appearance. Executive Producer Ken Corday confirmed the show seized the opportunity after Oliver publicly volunteered for soap roles.
