In a new interview, Cate Blanchett joked that she sees Prince William “all the time.” The Oscar-winning actress collaborated with him on the Earthshot Prize Council. It is a body the Prince of Wales established to find technological solutions to the climate change crisis.
Cate Blanchett reflects on working with Prince William
Ahead of her return to the London stage for the play Electra/Persona, Cate Blanchett sat down for a wide-ranging interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK. At one point, they delved into her environmental activism and her role on the Earthshot Prize Council. When interviewer Sasha Slater asked her if she hangs out with Prince William often, she replied, “Oh yes, all the time.” She laughed and added, “He’s got so much time on his hands, that man.”
Reflecting on working with the Prince of Wales, Blanchett described him as an “extraordinary leader, very hands-on in a consistent and practically engaged way.” She believes that his upbringing played a role in it, as well as his father. “He has inherited that interest. He’s grown up with it,” she said.
The Australian star portrayed Queen Elizabeth I in the 1998 period film Elizabeth. She received her first Oscar nomination for that role, but did not win one until 2004. She took home the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Katharine Hepburn in The Aviator. In 2013, she won the Oscar for Best Actress for her role in Blue Jasmine.
Elsewhere in the interview, Blanchett also spoke about the not-for-profit technology company RSL Media, which she co-founded. The company will work as a register where creatives can log whether they are comfortable with AI companies scraping their work for machine learning.
She said, When this technology started to blow up, a lot of the people who were at the cutting edge were going to governments and saying, “‘We’ve done this; how are we going to use it? What are the risks?’ [Everything’s] so polarized no one feels they can get around the same table to discuss the challenges, and the central one is consent.”
