One of Carey Mulligan‘s best-reviewed films of 2025 joins Peacock today. The streaming platform has revealed the movies and shows joining its streaming catalog this month, and The Ballad of Wallis Island is one of them.
Peacock subscribers can now stream The Ballad of Wallis Island beginning today, Aug. 6, 2026. The film follows Charles (Tim Key), a widower and lottery winner living on a remote island off the coast of Wales. When Charles’ favorite musical folk duo, McGwyer Mortimer, now broken up, arrives on the island to play a private show, he tries to reunite them.
Following its release last year, the film scored an impressive 97% on Rotten Tomatoes with 144 reviews. The film also holds a 93% Popcornmeter score based on more than 100 verified audience ratings.
What makes The Ballad of Wallis Island one of 2025’s best-reviewed movies?
Most of the film’s reviews praise its simple premise and its sentimentality, which succeeded in making many critics laugh and cry by the time its credits rolled. It is based on the 2007 British short film The One and Only Herb McGwyer Plays Wallis Island.
Sight and Sound’s Francesca Steele called it “an exceedingly British comedy that steers just clear of mawkish.” Observer’s Wendy Ide called it a “bittersweet, cardigan-clad small treasure of a film,” writing that it should have been the breakout film of last year’s summer. Metro UK’s Tori Brazier wrote that the film was “relentlessly funny,” while Empire Magazine’s Ian Freer wrote it was a “big-hearted, consoling hug of a movie.”
Apart from Mulligan, the film stars Tom Basden, Tim Key, Akemnji Ndifornyen, Sian Clifford, Steve Marsh, Luka Downie, and Kerrie Thomason. The film is directed by James Griffiths from a screenplay by Basden and Key.
