Donald Trump‘s White House UFC event may have grabbed headlines, but it didn’t translate into a financial win. Despite reportedly drawing millions of viewers, the UFC’s star-studded event ultimately turned into an allegedly costly setback, ending with losses that ran into the millions.
UFC Freedom 250 reportedly lost roughly $30 million after elaborate White House event
The numbers behind UFC Freedom 250 tell a very different story from the event’s massive publicity. According to BBC Sport, the promotion lost about $30 million after staging its headline-grabbing fight card on the White House South Lawn. While sponsorships and media partnerships recovered part of the bill, they could not erase the event’s unusually high production costs.
A senior UFC executive confirmed the financial hit. Chief financial officer of UFC’s parent company, Andrew Schleimer, told BBC Sport that the show’s scale dramatically affected the company’s bottom line.
“Given the event’s profile,” he said, the promotion expected “an approximate $30m loss,” adding that UFC’s margins and the company’s overall financial results were “meaningfully impacted.” Reports estimated the event initially carried a price tag of roughly $60 million before outside revenue offset part of the expense.
The financial outcome stood in contrast to the lofty expectations surrounding the event. UFC President Dana White had predicted the audience could compete with that of the Super Bowl, while President Donald Trump later claimed it might have carried greater significance than the FIFA World Cup.
Instead, the broadcast drew around 34 million viewers. This was a huge audience by most standards but roughly one-quarter of the viewership recorded for February’s Super Bowl LX (via Huffpost).
Held on Trump’s 80th birthday, the event leaned heavily into patriotic imagery. Fighters began their walkouts inside the White House before making their way toward the outdoor octagon, creating one of the most unusual backdrops in UFC history.
However, the evening also generated controversy when heavyweight Josh Hokit made inflammatory remarks about Michelle Obama during his post-fight interview, comments that Dana White later condemned.
