Andy Muschietti explains how the Great Depression will impact It: Welcome to Derry Season 2
It: Welcome to Derry Season 2 moves the timeline back to 1935, drawing from a specific chapter in Stephen King’s original novel known as the Bradley Gang Massacre. In that section of the book, a group of criminals hides out in Derry while running from federal agents, terrorizing shopkeepers along the way. This timeframe sits 27 years before the events of the first season, which revolved around a boy’s disappearance during a Cold War-era military scheme.
Muschietti describes the atmosphere his team is building around this era of financial struggle. “There’s gonna be a lot of that depression-era hustling in the air in our characters. Everybody’s trying to get by and survive the circumstances. They are gonna do crazy things,” he told Variety. He adds that the darker realities of the period won’t be glossed over. “And of course, the social, cultural, horrible things that were happening in the era, too. We’re not going to skip those. [They are the] very center and the heart of our story.”
The visual tone will also shift dramatically from what audiences saw before. Muschietti explains that instead of picturesque suburban settings, It: Welcome to Derry will look hollowed out. “In this case, on the surface, Derry is a graveyard almost. It’s a carcass of something because people are depleted, poor, tired, jobless, homeless. The kids don’t have a suburban, comforting life. They’re in a very different situation. Some of them are orphans or runaways, and so the environment is pretty bleak. But there’s always the aspect of hope that is always there, burning, and it’s what keeps our new group going.”
Despite the time jump, Muschietti confirms a thread will tie every era of the story together. “There will always be the connection, there’s a family tree that appears,” he says.
It: Welcome to Derry Season 2 does not have an official release date yet.
