Wizards Beyond Waverly Place Finale Shocks Fans by Revealing [Spoiler] Is Dead

The Wizards Beyond Waverly Place series finale just broke fans’ hearts with one character’s unexpected fate. Star and executive producer David Henrie explained why the creative team made this controversial decision.

Wizards Beyond Waverly Place finale reveals Mason’s fate

The four-part series finale of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place aired August 4 on Disney Channel. The finale revealed Mason (Gregg Sulkin) died at some point between the two shows. Alex (Selena Gomez) discovered this truth while navigating through various alternate dimensions during the finale.

In the alternate dimension, Mason appeared before Alex but could not propose to her. “I can’t propose to you… and you know why,” Mason told Alex. Alex then realized the painful truth about her ex-boyfriend’s passing. “Because you’re dead. You’re gone. That’s why all of this feels weird, it’s not real,” she replied.

Star and executive producer David Henrie explained why the creative team chose this direction. “We always wanted to bring Mason back, but it’s a double-edged sword any route you choose,” Henrie told TVLine. He noted that breaking up the couple would have angered fans equally. “The cleanest version was to kill him,” Henrie added.

Henrie also offered his own theories about Mason’s cause of death. “Look, he was an old werewolf, and werewolves pass on,” Henrie said. “Maybe he didn’t get enough moonlight, I don’t know.” The finale still allowed Alex and Mason to find emotional closure together.

Mason left Alex with heartfelt parting words before their final goodbye. “I’ll always love you, Alex Russo, and I’ll always be watching over you,” he said. Meanwhile, Sulkin fully supported the creative decision about his character’s fate. “Yeah, it would be tough if you kept me in the picture,” the actor told Henrie.

Henrie also revealed that fans reacted strongly when Season 2 confirmed Alex had a daughter. “Fans were furious because, obviously, that kid can’t come from Gregg,” Henrie said. The revelation meant Mason could not possibly be Billie’s biological father.
