Kentucky event has people chanting ‘Where’s Mitch McConnell?’ amid absence
The annual Fancy Farm political picnic usually gives Kentucky politicians a chance to trade jokes, jabs and campaign pitches. This year, however, one person who never stepped onto the stage became the center of attention. As per The New York Times, early in the event, Democratic attendees repeatedly shouted “Where’s Mitch? Where’s Mitch?” while Republicans answered with chants of their own, turning the senator’s absence into an unexpected headline.
The 84-year-old senator missed the event as he remains hospitalized, ending a decades-long streak at the western Kentucky tradition. McConnell, who is set to retire when his Senate term expires in January, acknowledged the disappointment in a statement, saying, “I hate that I’ll miss the fun this year,” before adding that “there’s no place I’d rather be on the first Saturday in August than with the good people of western Kentucky.” His absence fueled renewed questions about his health and when he might return to Washington.
Even without McConnell on stage, speakers and attendees frequently mentioned him. Republican Senate nominee Andy Barr said he had spoken with the longtime lawmaker. He shared that McConnell will resume his role in the Senate “very, very soon.” Event political chairman Steven Elder shared that sentiment, saying if McConnell had been healthy enough to leave the hospital, “he wouldn’t go to the Senate — he would come home” for Fancy Farm. Elder added that McConnell loved both “throwing punches” and taking them at the famously rowdy event.
Away from the microphones, opinions varied. Some Republicans wished McConnell’s office had shared more updates about his condition. Meanwhile, others argued the former Senate leader deserved patience after years of public service and his lifelong battle with the effects of polio. One attendee said officials “should have been more transparent,” while another urged critics to “remember everything he’s done for Kentucky.”
