Brad Pitt’s much-anticipated Cliff Booth sequel has received a new update. The character was created by Quentin Tarantino for his 2019 film Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. Pitt is set to reprise the role in the new spin-off.
OUATIH’s upcoming standalone sequel, The Adventures of Cliff Booth, was announced in April 2025 with David Fincher attached to direct. Netflix also confirmed that it had acquired the script, written by Tarantino. As a result, the movie will be distributed by Netflix instead of Sony Pictures, which released Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood in 2019.
In a recent interview with Variety, Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman explained why Sony is not releasing the OUATIH sequel. “Because David Fincher is exclusive to Netflix,” he shared. Rothman went on to note, “We were going to make the movie when Quentin [Tarantino] was directing it. But he decided that he didn’t want to do it and changed course.”
Rothman added, “The only other person that he was comfortable directing his script was David Fincher, and David Fincher was exclusive to Netflix, so we were not going to stand in anybody’s way.”
Rothman later admitted he was disappointed that Sony Pictures would not be distributing The Adventures of Cliff Booth.

The Adventures of Cliff Booth returns with Brad Pitt as the titular hero, a role he originated in Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. Timothy Olyphant reprises his role as James Stacy. The ensemble cast also includes Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, Carla Gugino, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Peter Weller, and more.
Leonardo DiCaprio was briefly in talks to make a cameo as Rick Dalton from OUATIH. Although the actor turned down the appearance, he expressed his support for the sequel. In a December 2025 interview with Deadline, DiCaprio stated, “I cannot wait to see the Cliff Booth story, but I’m not in it.”
The Adventures of Cliff Booth arrives in IMAX on November 25, 2026. The movie will make its streaming debut exclusively on Netflix on December 23.
