President Donald Trump‘s administration is reportedly seeking additional public funds for the summer’s Freedom 250 celebration, including the fair. The request targets Congress just months after lawmakers had already approved a massive spending package for the nation’s semiquincentennial. A final price tag for the troubled festivities on the National Mall remains unclear, but the administration is now pursuing millions more to settle outstanding bills.

Officials are asking Congress to approve a further $10 million to reimburse the National Park Service. The money would cover costs tied to the Rededicate 250 prayer event, the Great American State Fair and the July Fourth Salute to America.
The push comes despite Republicans steering $150 million toward Interior Department events through the One Big Beautiful Bill last year. Donald Trump‘s administration-backed Freedom 250 organisation kicked off the celebrations in June. Trump had promised the programming would be “great” and “unbelievable.”
The Interior Department told The Washington Post the new funding request is largely driven by security requirements. Officials pointed to heightened threats against prominent public gatherings, including a UFC event outside the White House and an attempted shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
Democratic Senator Jeff Merkley leads the Senate subcommittee that controls funding for the National Mall, where the Freedom 25 celebration took place. He criticised the request. “It is unacceptable to ask the American people to bail out Freedom 250,” Merkley wrote. He pointed out that Congress had already appropriated $150 million “without bipartisan input—with the administration promising that private donors would help finance the rest.”
Merkley has now demanded a detailed breakdown showing how the administration spent the original allocation and why additional taxpayer funds have become necessary.
The 16-day Great American State Fair had continuously run into trouble. Triple-digit temperatures forced organisers to shut down early during Independence Day weekend. At least 11 people required hospital treatment and dozens more received medical attention on site. Power failed repeatedly, and a Ferris wheel broke down. Visitors complained about high concession prices. Attendance numbers were also disputed.
