Netflix subscribers will soon see a number of fan-favorite titles leaving the streaming service, including several horror films and a modern sci-fi classic. The film Ex Machina not only secured an Oscar win but also launched the directorial career of 28 Days Later writer Alex Garland.
Ex Machina is leaving Netflix next month
Netflix subscribers only have a short time left to stream Ex Machina before it leaves the platform. The film is on track to leave the streaming service on August 1, 2026, according to What’s on Netflix.
The acclaimed science-fiction movie follows the journey of a young programmer named Caleb Smith, who gets the chance to participate in an experiment in synthetic intelligence. Organized by his firm’s reclusive CEO, Nathan Bateman, the test requires Caleb to evaluate the human qualities of a state-of-the-art AI robot at a secluded facility. However, as Caleb’s interactions with the robot progress, the AI’s own plans and wishes begin to present themselves, drawing him into a sinister struggle between the CEO and his creation.
Set primarily in a single location, Ex Machina features a small main cast, with Domhnall Gleeson playing the role of Caleb. Meanwhile, Oscar Isaac takes on the role of Nathan, with Alicia Vikander portraying the AI robot, Ava. The supporting cast of the movie also includes Sonoya Mizuno, Gana Bayarsaikhan, Corey Johnson, Claire Selby, and Tiffany Pisani, among others.
The film instantly earned rave reviews from critics and audiences alike on release. It holds a 92% Tomatometer score, along with an 86% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes, and earned just below $37 million at the global box office against a budget of $15 million, as per Box Office Mojo. The movie was also nominated for two Oscars, including a Best Original Screenplay nod for Garland, winning Best Visual Effects.
