Donald Trump wants the World Cup back in America, and he’s not willing to wait. The president revealed his bold pitch to FIFA’s top boss just hours before the 2026 final kicked off.
Donald Trump wants the FIFA tournament back in the United States immediately
President Donald Trump wants the United States to host the FIFA World Cup again as soon as possible. He expressed his desire during an interview with Fox Sports’ Jenny Taft before the 2026 World Cup final. The match between Spain and Argentina took place on Sunday, July 19, at MetLife Stadium.
Trump praised the tournament’s success and the millions of fans who attended across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. He also admitted to FIFA president Gianni Infantino that he initially doubted the event’s potential in the country. The strong turnout and positive reception, however, changed his mind entirely.
“I had a great idea for Gianni. I said, ‘You have to do two countries.’ So announce us again next time, and announce another country after that, that’ll take out some of the anger and the shock,” Trump said. “But based on the numbers, we will be requesting it again immediately.”
He added that the tournament should return while he is still around. His presidential term, however, ends in 2028. Morocco, Spain, and Portugal will host the 2030 World Cup, while Saudi Arabia holds the 2034 edition.
The earliest realistic opportunity for the U.S. falls in 2038. North America and Oceania will both be eligible under FIFA’s current hosting cycle rules. That timeline sits 12 years away from now.
Trump has maintained a close relationship with Infantino in recent years. Infantino awarded him the controversial FIFA Peace Prize in December. Trump also pushed Infantino to reverse a red card suspension for U.S. star Folarin Balogun during the tournament. FIFA ultimately overturned the decision in another move that drew widespread criticism. Trump attended the final and presented medals and the trophy to Spain’s victorious squad on the field.
