Royal author Sally Bedell Smith has claimed that Queen Camilla was present as a “witness” during King Charles’ meeting with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Buckingham Palace confirmed that the monarchs enjoyed a “private family occasion” with the Sussexes at Highgrove House (via Sky News).
Smith reportedly revealed that the Sussexes had to adhere to strict rules during this high-profile, private meeting. She wrote in her Substack that after intense pressure, Harry ultimately secured a meeting with his father. The prince took his wife and kids along to the royal Highgrove estate in Gloucestershire.
However, this meeting came with crucial rules: no photographs, nothing on social media, and no advance leaks to the press. Moreover, the Sussexes were not allowed to share any descriptions of what took place. This was aside from “a brief confirmation from the King’s office that it had occurred.”
Notably, Harry’s stepmother, Queen Camilla, was present at the reunion despite his strong criticism of her in his memoir, Spare. Smith wrote in her Substack: “Significantly, Queen Camilla was by her husband’s side, not least to serve as a witness to Charles’ interactions with his volatile younger son. As she had been in February 2024 when Harry came to London after Charles’s cancer diagnosis was revealed.”
For those unversed, Harry reportedly shares a frosty relationship with Queen Camilla and described her as a “wicked Stepmother” in his memoir Spare. He wrote: “I had complex feelings about gaining a step parent who, I believed, had recently sacrificed me on her personal PR altar. In a funny way, I even wanted Camilla to be happy. Maybe she’d be less dangerous if she was happy?”
