An upcoming Martin Scorsese movie hit his daughter so hard that she literally “burst into tears.” The film stars Academy Award winners Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence in leading roles.
Francesca Scorsese reveals why the new movie affected her so deeply
Martin Scorsese’s daughter and actress Francesca Scorsese recently appeared on the Zach Sang Show podcast. During the interaction with the host, she talked about her father’s new psychological horror movie, titled What Happens at Night.
Discussing the story of this movie, Francesca revealed that it resonated with her in an unexpected way. “I read the script with my dad and my best friend when we were in Italy and it was like the very beginning of the script and I didn’t really know anything about it. And then when we finished reading it I just like burst into tears because I was like, ‘This is you dealing with this now.'”
She explained how her father’s movies have shown his own journey in an unusual manner. “It all clicked to me, you know, like I think with his films, I mean, he’s sort of trying to figure himself out, going through different periods of life within each of his films.”
Speaking further about What Happens at Night’s plot, she said it feels like her father’s “exploration on his own religion and faith, you know? I think that this one is like a very personal, almost like grieving, that he’s kind of trying to explore because we’re kind of grieving and mourning my mom while she’s still here. That not to be a downer, but it’s true.”
In What Happens at Night, DiCaprio and Lawrence play a couple. They go to a strange European city to adopt a baby. However, Lawrence’s character is seen struggling with cancer and being very weak while her husband gets worried that her condition may prevent the orphanage from releasing their child. The story then explores the struggles in their marriage as they try to claim their baby.
Based on a 2020 novel of the same name by Peter Cameron, What Happens at Night comes from Apple Original Films. The cast also features Patricia Clarkson, Jared Harris, Mads Mikkelsen, and Welker White.
What Happens at Night has yet to receive an official release date window.
