The Dog Stars Is ‘The Best Movie’ Ridley Scott Has Done ‘Since The Martian’

Ridley Scott believes his upcoming post-apocalyptic thriller, The Dog Stars, surpasses everything he has created in the last eleven years. The director gave that verdict himself while promoting the film ahead of its debut next month.

Ridley Scott makes a huge claim about The Dog Stars and Jacob Elordi

Scott pointed to The Dog Stars as a career high point since 2015. That timeline covers an extraordinarily prolific stretch. Gladiator II alone was a critical and commercial success and got Oscar and Golden Globe nominations. Yet Scott places this new project above that success, along with Alien: Covenant, The Last Duel, and Napoleon. “It’s probably the best movie I’ve done since The Martian,” Scott stated to The Buyer.

Furthermore, the director singled out his leading man while explaining what gives the film its pulse. “This guy Jacob Elordi, who’s in it, is going to be a big star,” he said. “He’s a farm lad from Australia, so he and I got on great.” Ridley Scott then spoke about the story’s emotional core. “It touches the emotional possibilities – whatever happens, you need people. If the world ends, how do you deal with it?”

The story adapts Peter Heller’s novel and drops audiences into a world hollowed out by a pandemic. Jacob Elordi plays Hig, a former civilian pilot who shelters inside an abandoned airport. A dog and Bangley, a hardened ex-Marine played by Josh Brolin, form his entire circle. That lonely routine fractures when a faint radio transmission reaches Hig. He abandons safety and flies into the unknown, chasing the sliver of hope the signal represents.

20th Century Studios distills the premise as “a riveting, epic thriller set in a world where survival is instinct, but humanity is a choice.” Margaret Qualley, Allison Janney, Guy Pearce, and Benedict Wong round out the cast. Scott produces alongside Michael Pruss, Cliff Roberts, and screenwriter Mark L. Smith.

Audiences can judge the director’s bold claim themselves when The Dog Stars releases in theatres on August 28, 2026.
