Prince Harry’s latest visit to the UK has reignited discussion about the state of his relationship with the royal family. While reports suggest the Duke of Sussex may be making gradual progress with King Charles, royal experts believe there is little chance of a breakthrough with Prince William during this trip.
Prince William has ‘absolute contempt’ for Prince Harry, says expert
Harry’s return to Britain has attracted widespread attention, particularly amid speculation over whether Meghan Markle and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, would join him. However, the Duke is currently carrying out a week of Invictus Games engagements on his own, while Meghan and the children have not accompanied him.
According to royal expert Duncan Larcombe, the visit is unlikely to lead to any reconciliation between the estranged brothers. “Harry almost certainly won’t see William and Kate,” Larcombe said. “From everything I’m told, William still has absolute contempt for his brother and sees what he has done as the ultimate betrayal, which isn’t surprising when you consider what Harry wrote about in his autobiography Spare.”
Prince Harry is in Britain to mark the one-year countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham. Harry founded the event in 2014 for wounded, injured, and sick service members and military veterans. His schedule includes attending an Invictus Games Foundation event at Chatham House in London and visiting Birmingham Children’s Hospital before the city’s official launch celebrations for next year’s Games.
Ahead of the visit, reports indicated Meghan, Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, were expected to travel to the UK, marking what would have been the family’s first visit together since Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in 2022. However, they are now believed to have remained at the family’s holiday home in Portugal while Harry carries out his engagements.
The reported change followed the ongoing dispute over Prince Harry’s security arrangements in Britain. Although King Charles III reportedly offered the family accommodation at a royal residence during the visit, officials reportedly declined Harry’s request for taxpayer-funded police protection throughout the trip.
