Experts believe that Meghan Markle’s UK return with Prince Harry may not unfold as warmly as she hopes. The Sussexes stepped back from royal duties in 2020 in a move widely dubbed “Megxit.” Since then, Markle has visited Britain twice, for Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee and later that same year for her funeral.
Expert suggests that Meghan Markle might face ‘boos’ on UK trip
Experts are anticipating that a UK visit by Meghan Markle may be met with audible boos from sections of the public. Although Prince Harry has frequently traveled to Britain in the years following their exit, the As Ever founder has remained in Montecito, California, with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
However, this time, his family will reportedly join the Prince in the UK. Officials have not confirmed how long they will stay, but reports indicate that the family will use a royal residence.
While it’s unclear how many times the family will appear together in public, sources indicate that Markle will join Harry for the Invictus Games one-year countdown. Given that, some commentators are of the opinion that she might face a cool reception, per the Daily Express.
Yet, brand and culture expert Nick Ede noted that even if boos arise, they won’t speak for the wider British public. He believes that most people will still extend courtesy and suspects that many will feel curiosity rather than hostility.
“However, there remains a vocal section of the British public who feel disillusioned by the couple’s repeated criticisms of the Royal Family and their decision to air private grievances publicly. That division means she is unlikely to receive a universally warm welcome.” Ede added.
The expert continued, “I think there is a possibility Meghan could face some boos, particularly if she appears at large public events where emotions tend to run high. We’ve seen members of the Royal Family receive mixed reactions in the past, and Meghan remains a polarising figure.”
That said, Ede argued that most Britons are respectful by nature, especially when children are present.
