A new book by journalists Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan explores the fallout between President Donald Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk, highlighting the tensions that emerged after Musk criticized Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill.”
According to the pages of “Regime Change: Inside the Imperial Presidency of Donald Trump”, the two clashed over Trump’s debt-cutting legislation, which would allegedly impact Musk’s electric car company, Tesla.
A new book highlights Donald Trump’s reaction to his breakup with Elon Musk
According to RadarOnline, Musk took to X to say, “I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore. This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.”
Musk’s comments seem to have genuinely hurt Trump. According to the book, the New York Times journalists write, “When the President saw Musk’s post, he looked at it for several beats, an expression close to pensive crossing his face. ‘They always leave me,'” he finally said. “They always do this. This is why I can’t have friends.”
As per the book, Trump’s attempts to call and make up were foiled when his repeated calls went to voicemail. A despairing Trump said, “He never doesn’t take my calls.” Publicly, however, Trump put his aggressive foot forward and said, “The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts.”
As reported by the journalists, there was a brief attempt to salvage the relationship after the public fallout. Musk reportedly attended a private dinner with Trump, where the two men tried to move past their disagreement.
However, the meeting did little to repair the damage, with the book suggesting the relationship never recovered after they clashed over the controversial legislation – a sweeping tax-and-spending package that included major tax cuts, increased border security funding, and reductions in clean energy incentives.
