Savannah Guthrie broke down in tears on NBC’s Today while reacting to an unfortunate development in Nancy Guthrie‘s abduction. The NBC journalist’s mother was abducted from her Arizona home in February this year, with the family receiving a ransom note after the disappearance. After taking a hiatus from Today, Savannah returned to host the show in April.
What is the new development in the Savannah and Nancy Guthrie situation?
Following the abduction, the Guthrie family was sent a second note. Reports alleged that the second note claimed Nancy died during the abduction, though this has not been confirmed. The contents of the second note have not been revealed to the public. Savannah became emotional while responding to reports concerning her mother’s alleged death during the June 23 episode of Today (via Variety).
“I love you guys and I love this place,” Guthrie said. “This is unusual and unprecedented to say the least, to be sitting here. I don’t have any comment on this story, and I’m not involved in our coverage, but I can’t pretend I’m not here. And so since I am, I want to just take the opportunity to ask people, to really to beg people to come forward. Somebody knows something, and this is a new story today that is on your radar, but this is the life that my sister lives, that I live, that my brother lives, that our extended families live, that our children live, every day. And we are in agony. We cannot be at peace.”

“No matter how much I try to come out here every day and smile and find that joy, and I will, I promise I will, this is a moment to tell you that we need your help. We’re begging for your help, and I’m not going to miss that opportunity. And so please if you’re watching, no matter how small, the reward is there. You can tell us, it can be anonymous. Please do the right thing for us, for our family, for our children. We love our mom, and we’ll never stop looking for her, ever.”
The first ransom note asked the family to pay $6 million in Bitcoin in exchange for Nancy’s return. Shortly after receiving the note, Savannah addressed the sender on social media, requesting Nancy’s safe return. The family is currently offering a $1 million reward for help in retrieving Nancy.
Authorities continue searching for Nancy Guthrie, and her whereabouts remain unknown. Amid the ongoing search for Nancy, Savannah is teaming up with Jimmy Fallon for a brand new NBC show, which will premiere on the network in 2027.
