Donald Trump blames Barack Obama amid reflecting pool drama
The latest debate began when CBS News correspondent Ed O’Keefe asked Donald Trump about earlier promises regarding repairs to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. In April, Trump had said the work could be completed in about a week for roughly $1 million. When pressed on the matter, however, the president shifted the conversation away from the current project and toward the Obama administration (via Huffpost).
Rather than directly addressing the question, Trump responded by bringing up former President Barack Obama. “Barack Hussein Obama, have you ever heard of him?” Trump said before claiming Obama had spent more than $100 million trying to repair the pool. He also alleged that Obama and President Joe Biden together spent $147 million on the site and that the project never properly opened afterward.
Those figures quickly came under scrutiny. According to a report by The Associated Press, Obama’s renovation project concluded in 2012 and cost about $34 million, not the amount Trump referenced. The report also stated that the Biden administration did not carry out any major renovation work on the Reflecting Pool.
The controversy arrives as the pool faces renewed attention following reports of peeling paint and algae growth shortly after it was refilled. Critics on social media argued that Trump’s comments did little to answer questions about the current condition of the site. One user remarked, “When blaming Biden isn’t working, go back and blame the guy before him.” Another sarcastically asked, “Is Barack Hussein Obama in the room with you now, Mr. President?”
Others pushed back on Trump’s comments about the water source, noting that the Reflecting Pool has historically drawn water from the nearby river system as part of its design. One critic wrote, “It’s always taken water from the river. That’s the design.”
