A 2026 mystery comedy film led by Hugh Jackman will soon be available to stream on Amazon Prime Video. Based on a popular novel, the story centers on an unlikely group of animals who try to solve their owner’s murder.

The Sheep Detectives streams on Prime Video sooner than expected

The Sheep Detectives begins streaming on Amazon Prime Video from Wednesday, June 24, 2026.

The movie is based on Leonie Swann’s 2005 novel, Three Bags Full. Kyle Balda directed the adaptation based on a screenplay by Craig Mazin, who is known for creating two acclaimed HBO Max series, Chernobyl and The Last of Us.

The Sheep Detectives’ story takes place in the fictional English village of Denbrook. It follows a flock of sheep led by Lily, a clever Shetland sheep, who is trying to solve the murder of their beloved shepherd, George. Inspired by the detective stories that George read them every evening, the sheep launch their own investigation. Their investigation results in a series of hilarious and unexpected moments. Eventually, they team up with the village’s clumsy police officer, Tim.

The movie’s cast features Hugh Jackman, Nicholas Braun, Nicholas Galitzine, Molly Gordon, and Emma Thompson, among others. It also features voices from Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Chris O’Dowd, Regina Hall, Patrick Stewart, Bella Ramsey, and more.

Amazon MGM Studios handled The Sheep Detectives’ distribution in the United States, releasing it on May 8, 2026. It received an overwhelming amount of positive reviews, with viewers praising the movie for delivering a heartfelt story that also tackles mature emotional and social themes.

On Rotten Tomatoes, it currently holds a critics’ approval rating of 95%, while the user score sits at 96%. Meanwhile, on IMDb, more than 20K users have given it an average score of 7.6/10. At the global box office, it grossed $126.2 million against a reported $75 million budget.
