President Donald Trump has threatened to add a New York Times article to his existing $15 billion lawsuit against the publication. The threat came after the NYT published an analysis questioning the results of the US-Iran war. Trump called the report “TREASONOUS” on Truth Social, rejecting its claim that the four-month war had changed little.
Donald Trump attacks the NYT’s analysis of the Iran war
In a lengthy post, he argued that Iran’s military, navy, air force, and leadership had been destroyed, its economy broken, and the Strait of Hormuz reopened. All while US stocks and jobs hit record highs.
The New York Times article that’s getting the bashing is titled ‘What Changed After Almost 4 Months of War? Analysts Say Not Much.’ It argues that the peace deal failed to meet the goals Trump set when he launched the war on February 28. Journalist Neil MacFarquhar wrote that Iran’s ability to consistently retaliate against repeated US strikes. It inflicted damage that had effectively amounted to a strategic victory for Tehran, a conclusion Trump publicly rejected.
Additionally, it noted that Iran’s nuclear programme is badly damaged. But it has not been fully dismantled, with its future left to further negotiations. Similarly, Iran’s ballistic missile programme went unaddressed in the peace deal. The publication also warned that Iran’s regional proxy network continues to pose a threat.
After all, Trump’s outburst comes as Iran has threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz again. It was amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. US-Iran talks in Switzerland stretched into a second day on Monday. It was following a tense opening session in which Tehran repeated its threat to shut the waterway. To conclude, this is not the first time Trump has clashed publicly with the New York Times. In fact, even other media outlets this year have been critical of their coverage of his administration’s foreign policy decisions and more.
