An Oscar-nominated Hugh Jackman film has emerged as a streaming hit following its theatrical run. After its Netflix debut, it became one of the top 10 most-watched films.
Song Sung Blue is doing very well on Netflix streaming
As of June 16, 2026, Song Sung Blue, starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson in the lead roles, is the #6 movie on Netflix in the United States, according to data shared by FlixPatrol. Accordingly, it is surpassed by five titles: Maternal Instinct, Office Romance, Ticket to Paradise, Colors of Evil: Black, and Fast Charlie.
However, it outranks the other four titles on the list: GOAT, The Marked Woman, After Everything, and Bee Movie.
Distributed domestically by Focus Features and internationally by Universal Pictures, the movie first screened at the AFI Film Festival on October 26, 2025. It subsequently premiered theatrically two months later on Christmas Day, December 25.
The biopic musical received generally positive critical and audience reception. This is reflected in its robust scores on review aggregators. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie boasts a “certified fresh” approval rating of 77% and a superior “verified hot” audience score of 97%. Meanwhile, Metacritic has assigned it a Metascore of 61 and a user score of 6.8, both denoting “generally favorable” reception. Moreover, IMDb users have given it 7.2/10 stars.
Furthermore, Hudson’s performance in particular earned significant praise, netting her Golden Globe, Actor Award, BAFTA, and Oscar nominations. However, she did not win any of these.
On the other hand, the film suffered financially, becoming a box office flop. Made on an estimated $30 million production budget, it only managed to gross roughly $58 million before finishing its theatrical run (via The Numbers).
The story follows the life and career of Mike and Claire Sardina. The pair gained recognition for performing together as the Neil Diamond tribute band, Lightning & Thunder.
Craig Brewer directed Song Sung Blue. He also co-wrote the screenplay, which adapts Greg Koh’s 2008 documentary movie of the same name. In addition to Jackman and Hudson, the movie stars Ella Anderson, Hudson Henley, King Princess, and Michael Imperioli, among others.
